On the hunt for the King

As many people know, Singapore is a very tiny island with barely any land. But even with so less land, some patches feel out of place and isolated from the others. One such place in Punggol barat located near sletar airport and SRCC. Recently there were many sightings of a king quail in a particular area. So I decided to go and here is my story on how it went.

On Tuesday July  10th I got news that there has been a sighting of a barred butonquail as well near the King Quail (KQ). This got me excited and I decided to go that day on my cycle. I left the house at 2pm with my brother on my cycle. We cycled on the Round island cycle path as that was one of the smoothest cycling paths in Singapore. So we went from our house, through east coast park, next to the airport and up to changi.

The problem started to arrive when we started to reach changi. We hoped to reach  Punggol barat by 4:00pm but we only had reached changi by then. We still had a good 25 km left and we had already done 25km. We had misjudged the distance and due to that we were running out of daylight. So me and my brother decided to see how far we reach.

By 5:00pm we had reach pasir ris park, and oh god, the road to there was tiering. We had to go up and down so many hills and I was losing energy fast. We had to make a design on whether to continue, but we decided to stay at PRP. Which in fact was a good decision as we got to see many birds. We saw 10 hornbills, 3 spotted wood owls and 1 common tailorbird nest. I managed to get some decent images from this stop.

I was thankful that we stopped here and not gone any further as night was approaching.

Then on thursday as I was coming back from my tuitions, I realised I could go once again. So I got home, dropped off all my stuff and got my camera equipment. I decided to just take  a taxi to go there as I was unsure about the MRT.

I reached by 3 and within 20 mins I managed to see the male Button-quail.

Additionally, I saw strawberry finch's, cinnamon rumped waxbill, black headed mania and zitting cisticola's.

By 3:45 the skies started to open up and I decided to go home. As I did not have a internet connection, i only had to guess where I could get a taxi or reach an mrt. Thats when I remembered that I saw an MRT, or as I should say LRT.

I walked about 4km to the Nibong LRT and by that way I could get home.

Then on the 16th I decided to go with my family.I  managed to see the button quail, but the king is still elusive.
